Indoor Growing : Opinions about American Dream

    Author: Ganja
Subject: Opinions about American Dream
Posted: 29 July 2010 at 17:26

Well, this is the thing. If there were plenty of resin glands on the mature flowers, it's very difficult to understand why the buds would lack potency.

Resin glands are the most concentrated form of THC on the plant. If a plant produces resin, it's a sign of high potency (after all, it's possible for plants to be very potent even without visible resin), and there's no such thing as a resin gland that doesn't contain cannabinoid-rich resin.

Same goes for the smell, usually. A great deal of a bud's aroma comes from the terpenes present in and emitted from the resin glands.

The fact that your AD buds had no shortage of visible resin but a lack of potency or aroma suggests that something destroyed or severely degraded the resin at some point in the late flowering or drying process.

Were there any unusual or undesirable conditions in the grow area during the second half of flowering? We've had a particularly hot summer here in the north. How was the temperature in the AD's grow area?

How long did you flower these plants?

How did you dry these buds?

How soon after harvest did you first try these buds?

Also, when you say the resin was mature, does that mean you examined the colour of the glands with a magnifier prior to harvest? If so, what were the proportions of clear, milky and amber resin glands?

EDIT - in answer to the hash question, I always prefer water hash to sieved, but either process is fine. A plant that's suitable for one method is suitable for the other.

The problem may be that the resin has been damaged, so while collecting and concentrating it should improve potency, if the dried bud didn't affect you, the hash made from it might also be quite weak.

Still, making hash is always a good idea, IMHO, especially if you don't particularly want to smoke the bud. I'd also be interested to hear if the hash is noticeably stronger than the bud, and also (assuming you use the water hash process) whether the best grade of hash bubbles when heated. If it does make nice-looking hash that bubbles and still doesn't have much effect, that would be truly bizarre.

Indoor Growing : HELP!!! Is my Jack Flash a male!? (pics included)

    Author: Ganja
Subject: HELP!!! Is my Jack Flash a male!? (pics included)
Posted: 29 July 2010 at 15:28

It is highly unusual for a feminised JF#5 seed to turn out male. As far as I can recall, this is the first one I've heard of since the launch.

One forum member made a mother plant from JF#5, cloned it for a few grows and, near harvest time (on about the third set of clones), noticed a few male flowers on an otherwise female plant. That's the only report of intersexuality for JF#5 I know of, and the problem above is not of intersexuality - that looks like a full-blown male.

I'm at a bit of a loss to say why this one plant turned out this way. It shouldn't be the conditions and, in any case, even really bad conditions would be likely to cause a female to turn hermaphrodite, not fully male.

A rogue seed from a non-fem strain is theoretically possible, but extremely unlikely, as no seeds, regular or fem, are packed in a manner that allows mix-ups (this is just as important for making sure all the regular strains never get mixed up).

Another option is that this is simply a freak - the one in a thousand (or ten thousand) that turns out male, despite the best efforts of humans to make every seed female. Everything cannabis does is to improve its chances of sexual reproduction, so turning out the occasional male fits with its biological determination.

Even so, I'm very surprised to see this first male from a pack of JF#5.

Please let us know how the other plants develop.

If you have a place you can quarantine the male for a few more weeks in a 12/12 photoperiod - so that it can flower a bit longer but can't fertilise the females - it might be a good idea to save some of the pollen from this plant. Applied carefully to the lower buds on the best females, it may produce something very interesting in the f2 generation.
